How to Keep Squirrels Off Your Bird Feeder (Methods That Actually Work)
Share
If squirrels are emptying your bird feeder, you are in good company. In a study of garden feeders in Reading, England, researchers logged 33,000 feeder visits and 44% were grey squirrels. Worse, birds avoided feeders that squirrels raided often, even when no squirrel was there.
Here are the methods that actually work, ranked from most to least effective, plus a twist a lot of feeder camera owners discover: the squirrels become the best show in the garden.
Why squirrels win (most of the time)
Squirrels can jump around 3 metres (10 feet) sideways, drop from branches above, climb almost any pole, and chew through plastic. Most "squirrel-proof" failures come down to one thing: the feeder is within jumping range of something.
1. Get the placement right (the 5-7-10 rule)
This is the single most effective fix, and it is free:
- 5 feet (1.5m) off the ground
- 7 feet (2m) or more from anything they can climb up, like fences, walls and sheds
- 10 feet (3m) or more below or away from overhanging branches
Treat these as starting points. Some athletic squirrels beat them, but most feeder raids happen because a branch or fence is far closer.
2. Add a baffle
A baffle is a dome or cylinder that stops squirrels climbing up a pole or dropping down a hanging wire. A cone or stovepipe baffle on the pole, set below the feeder and above jumping height, combined with good placement, stops most squirrels completely. On hanging feeders, a wide dome baffle above the feeder blocks drops from branches.
3. Change the menu
- Safflower seed: cardinals, chickadees and many other birds eat it; squirrels tend to be less keen.
- Nyjer seed: finches love it, squirrels mostly ignore it.
- Hot pepper (capsaicin) seed or suet: birds cannot taste the heat, but mammals can. Many people swear by it.
- Avoid peanuts and corn mixes in feeders squirrels can reach. Those are squirrel favourites.
4. Give them their own feeder
It sounds backwards, but a squirrel feeder with corn or peanuts on the far side of the garden often keeps them busy and away from the bird feeder. Peace treaty, not war.
5. Keep the ground clean
Spilled seed under the feeder is an open invitation. Use no-mess seed like sunflower hearts, or a seed tray, and sweep up regularly.
6. Use a weight-activated or caged feeder
Some feeders close their ports under a squirrel's weight, and caged feeders let small birds through but keep squirrels (and bigger birds) out. Effective, but they limit which birds can feed.
What does not work (or is not kind)
- Grease or oil on poles: it harms birds' feathers if they touch it. Avoid.
- Trapping and relocating: other squirrels move straight into the territory, and in many places it is restricted.
- Thin plastic "squirrel-proof" tubes: squirrels chew through them in days.
Or... start enjoying the squirrels
Here is something a lot of feeder camera owners do not expect. Once you can see squirrels up close, they become the funniest thing in the garden: the plotting, the acrobatics, the cheek-stuffing. Squirrel clips are some of the most shared videos in feeder-cam communities.

Peeka has two-way audio, so you can talk to a squirrel through the speaker from your phone. Many will freeze mid-bite. It also has infrared night vision, so you see who is visiting after dark, from mice to foxes and raccoons.
Combine it with the placement and baffle tips above, and you get the best of both: birds eating in peace, and front-row seats when a squirrel tries its luck.

What is the best way to keep squirrels off a bird feeder?
Placement plus a baffle. Hang or mount the feeder about 1.5m up, at least 2 to 3m from anything squirrels can jump from, and add a baffle below or above it.
What bird seed do squirrels not like?
Safflower and nyjer are least popular with squirrels. Hot pepper treated seed also deters them, and birds are not affected by the heat.
How far can a squirrel jump to a bird feeder?
Grey squirrels can jump around 3m (10 feet) horizontally, so keep feeders at least that far from fences, trees and roofs.
Will squirrels damage a bird feeder camera?
Squirrels can chew exposed cables and soft plastics. A feeder camera with a solar roof and no trailing wires, mounted using the placement rules above, is far less exposed.
