How Long Does It Take Birds to Find a New Feeder? (Plus 9 Ways to Speed It Up)
Share
Short answer: most gardens see their first visitor within a few days to two weeks. Bold "scout" birds like chickadees, tits, sparrows and cardinals often turn up in 24 to 48 hours. Shyer birds like woodpeckers and nuthatches can take two weeks or more. In summer, when wild food is everywhere, it can take a month.
If your new feeder has been up a few days with nothing, do not give up. Here is what is going on, and nine things that speed it up.
Why birds ignore a brand new feeder
Birds find food mostly by sight, and by watching each other. A new object in the garden looks like a possible threat, so the first birds approach carefully, often several times, before they land. Once one bird feeds safely, others notice and follow. That is why visits tend to go from nothing, to one brave bird, to a crowd within a few days.
A few things slow this down: no cover nearby (birds feel exposed), a spot they cannot see from the air, plenty of natural food in the season, or seed they do not like.
The typical timeline
| When | Who usually turns up first |
|---|---|
| Day 1 to 2 | US: chickadees, house sparrows, cardinals. UK: blue tits, great tits, house sparrows, robins. |
| Week 1 | US: goldfinches, titmice, doves. UK: goldfinches, chaffinches. |
| Week 2 and later | Woodpeckers, nuthatches and shyer species. |
Discovery is fastest in late autumn, winter and early spring, when natural food is scarce. That makes a new feeder over the holidays perfect timing.
9 ways to get birds to your new feeder faster
- Hang it near cover. Within about 3 to 5 metres (10 to 15 feet) of a bush, hedge or tree gives birds a safe place to wait and escape to.
- Put it at the right height. About 1.5 metres (5 feet) up, out of reach of cats.
- Use the seed birds love most. Black-oil sunflower seed or sunflower hearts suit almost every feeder bird. Skip cheap mixes full of milo and cracked corn, which most small birds throw on the ground.
- Make a seed trail. Scatter a little seed on the ground and the perch for the first few days so birds can spot it from the air.
- Place it near an old feeder if you have one. Birds already visiting will find the new one quickly. You can remove the old one later.
- Add water. A birdbath nearby is a magnet, especially in dry spells and freezing weather.
- Keep it full. Birds build routes around reliable food. An empty feeder drops off the route.
- Keep seed fresh and dry. Mouldy or damp seed drives birds away and can make them ill. Clean the feeder regularly.
- Be patient in summer. With insects and berries everywhere, feeders are less urgent. Visits pick up again in autumn.
A note for UK gardens: feed seasonally
In April 2026 the RSPB updated its advice because of disease in finches. It now recommends pausing seed and peanut feeders from 1 May to 31 October, offering small amounts of suet or mealworms in summer instead, cleaning feeders weekly, and using hanging feeders rather than flat bird tables. The good news: November to April, when most people hang a new feeder, is exactly when seed feeding is recommended.
How a feeder camera helps you know if birds are coming
The frustrating part of a new feeder is not knowing. Birds often visit early in the morning or while you are at work, so you can miss the first week of visits entirely and think nobody came.

A camera feeder like Peeka sends an alert the moment a bird lands and records the visit, so you see your very first visitor even if it came at 6am. The AI names the species and saves it to your collection, which turns the waiting into a game: who will be number one?
And because garden birds usually fly off when a person gets within about 8 to 10 metres, the camera shows you what you could never see from the window: the colours, the feathers, the little head tilts.

How long does it take birds to find a new bird feeder?
Usually a few days to two weeks. Bold species can arrive within 24 to 48 hours, while shy species may take longer. In summer it can take a month or more.
Why are no birds coming to my new feeder?
The most common reasons are no cover nearby, seed birds do not like, a feeder that is hard to see, or lots of natural food in the season. Move it near a bush, switch to sunflower hearts, and scatter a little seed underneath.
What is the best seed to attract birds quickly?
Black-oil sunflower seed or sunflower hearts. Almost every common feeder bird eats them, and hearts leave less mess.
Does moving a bird feeder scare birds away?
Briefly. Birds that know the feeder will usually find it again within a day or two if you move it a short distance.
